What is picture translation?

Picture translation — also called camera translation, visual translation, or AR translation — uses your phone's camera to recognize text in a foreign language and overlay the translation in real time.

Instead of typing a menu, street sign, or label, you point your camera and the app does the rest. The best implementations also work offline, so you can translate signs when you have no data connection.

How it works under the hood

The pipeline has three stages. First, optical character recognition (OCR) finds and reads the text in the image. Then a machine-translation engine converts it to your language. Finally, the app renders the translation back over the original image, matching the font, size, and color so it looks natural.

Modern apps use on-device neural networks for OCR, which makes the process fast and private. Some also use augmented reality to keep the translation pinned to the sign as you move your phone.
